Spring Adult Classes

Our adult programming includes classes for students of all skill and experience levels, from those looking to explore a new creative outlet to the seasoned performer eager to be challenged by Piven's legendary training technique. Each of our adult classes is designed to be taken multiple times.

Improvisation, Games, & Risk Taking

Want to know what Piven is all about? This class allows students to discover the Piven Technique by learning theatre games & improvisation in a fun, supportive, ensemble-based environment. This class is perfect for all students looking to discover & re-discover our work.

Games, Story & Scene

Learn Piven’s core improvisational technique and apply it to scripted stories & scenes. Each session of the class is centered on a different theme. Past themes have included stories of the sea, family relationships, and magical realism. Under the expert instruction of a senior teacher, students will create and perform stories by focusing on text exploration, subtext, dialogue and narration.

Basic Piven Scene Study

In this class, students prepare and rehearse scenes from contemporary plays, utilizing improvisation and games to deepen characters and relationships. Students explore how Piven uses the impulsiveness of improvisation during the rehearsal process while being restrained by and respectful of a script. Best for students who have taken Improvisation, Games, and Risk Taking or Games, Story, and Scene, but previous experience is not required.

Building Ensemble and the Art of Adaptation

Piven Theatre Workshop has been devising new literary adaptations since our inception over forty years ago. In this class, we will give our adult students the opportunity to experience the creative energy of an ensemble-driven, text-based devising process. Through six weeks of group improvisation exercises and text exploration, students will adapt and perform stories together.

On-Camera Technique: Auditioning for Film and Television

Practice your audition technique and learn the skills that set on-camera work apart from the theatrical auditioning process. Students will prepare to audition for everything from one-liners to series regular to feature film auditions. Students will learn exercises to become comfortable in front of the camera and work with scenes pulled from a variety of films and shows shot in the Chicagoland area.

Intensive Classes

Adult Improv Showcase

Take your work from the classroom to the stage! Working with a senior Piven instructor, students learn how the signature improvisation exercises and theatre games Piven has used to train generations of actors function in performance to create dynamic improvised pieces! Students have the opportunity to form their own ensembles and develop their own performance concepts under the instructor’s expert guidance. To highlight our season-long focus on sharing the voices and stories of our community, this year’s Showcase program will also feature a storytelling component taught by master storyteller Kevin D’Ambrosio. The program culminates with students taking the stage to perform in our Second Annual Piven Improvisation Series as part of Piven’s 2016-2017 Season!

Piven Technique for the Actor

Building on the skills developed in our other adult programs, students use Piven improvisation and games to unlock spontaneity and take scene work to the next level. This advanced class is taught by senior teacher Robin Chaplik and is intended for students with acting experience. Each session has a different focus, such as material from a specific playwright or a particular skill for the actor, like character development or text work.

Piven Technique for Performance
PREREQUISITE: PIVEN TECHNIQUE FOR THE ACTOR OR BY INSTRUCTOR PERMISSION

Led by senior teacher Robin Chaplik, advanced students who have completed Piven Technique for the Actor will rehearse together for four weeks to workshop a staged performance for the Piven community as part of our Lab@Piven. Depending on the level of participation, and the composition of those participating, this could be a series of performed scenes, staged readings, story ensembles, personal stories, or a full play. It is bound to be an exciting event for our community & students!
