Our most advanced experience for young actors, this class explores the full Piven canon and culminates in a full performance integrating staged contemporary scenes, literary adaptation, and improvisation.
In addition to working with senior Piven instructors to learn core Piven course work—improvisation technique, text analysis, and script work—students will have the opportunity to work with a variety of celebrated Chicago theatre artists in valuable, resume-building workshops. In recent years, Conservatory students have had the opportunity to learn skills such as stage combat with multiple-Jeff Award nominees R & D Choreography, Viewpoints technique with Jeff Award-winner Robin Chaplik, monologue coaching with talent agent Mike Theisen of Gray Talent. These specialty classes are designed to complement our core curriculum and give students a taste of the multidisciplinary approach taught at the nation’s foremost conservatories, while our core curriculum will help students hone their acting skills and improvisation technique while learning about the values of ensemble-driven theatre.
In Summer 2017 only, special guest director Mikalina Rabinsky will join Conservatory for intensive workshops in Commedia dell’arte, which has been one of our most popular afternoon workshops since Conservatory’s inception. Learn how this theatrical form, which originated in 16th-century Italy, creates hilarious, vibrant theatre in today’s world while also training vital acting skills! Rabinsky, who has directed Piven’s renowned Young People’s Company and directed 2015’s acclaimed Dead Man Walking, will also stage a piece in Conservatory’s culminating performance.
Because of the ensemble-dependent nature of this program, students must be accepted by application to register and any absences must be approved prior to acceptance into the program. Applications available for download below.
