Story and Sketch 2017
Improv, Storytelling, and Sketch Comedy
Four years ago, Anytime/Anywhere was created by Artistic Director Jennifer Green as a way to highlight Piven's long history teaching and performing long-form improv. With a desire to highlight current Piven improvisers, both youth and adult, and professional and student, the first series was a great success. Over three years it grew and expanded, and this year we are building on that growth with Story and Sketch!
Story and Sketch highlights improv, solo storytelling, and sketch comedy all in one exciting festival, honoring the Workshop's commitment to exploring storytelling of all kinds.
We're also providing time and space for student improvisers and storytellers to perform during the series. Students enrolled in the Adult or High School Improv and Storytelling classes are guaranteed performances over the one-month run. Send in a class application today to ensure your spot on our stage this fall!
Adult Improv and Storytelling Showcase
Take your work from the classroom to the stage! Learn how the signature improvisation exercises and theatre games Piven has used to train generations of actors function in performance to create dynamic improvised pieces! Students have the opportunity to form their own ensembles and develop their own performance concepts under the instructor’s expert guidance. To highlight our season-long focus on sharing the voices and stories of our community, this year’s Showcase program will also feature a storytelling component taught by master storyteller Kevin D’Ambrosio. The program culminates with students taking the stage to perform in Story and Sketch: Piven’s Fourth Annual Improv and storytelling series, sharing both improvised ensemble stories and rehearsed individual stories with the wider community and our professional season patrons!
September 18 – October 23 | Mondays 7:00 – 10:00PM
Performances November 3 and November 10

High School Improv and Storytelling Showcase
Advanced students learn to use signature Piven theatre games and improvisation exercises to create improvised, ensemble-based stories. To highlight Piven’s mission to celebrate each individual’s unique voice, the Showcase program will also feature storytelling workshops with master storyteller Kevin D’Ambrosio. The program will culminate with Showcase students taking the stage alongside Performance Project and the Young People’s Company to perform in Piven’s Fourth Annual Story & Sketch Series, sharing both improvised ensemble stories and rehearsed individual stories with the wider community!
