For over 50 years, Piven Theatre Workshop has provided a space for artists to gather, learn, grow, and create.

Education and mentorship are at the heart of what we do. Our theatre classes, workshops, and performance opportunities are all structured around providing people of all ages and backgrounds with the tools to express themselves. We are, at our core, storytellers and we strive to create a space for people to share their unique voices and experiences.

The Piven Training Technique focuses heavily on the value of the ensemble, and the value of artistic collaboration. Learning the value of self-expression while still maintaining a responsibility to the group, each artist develops an understanding of themselves as a unique and valuable part of the greater whole. We have found that this combination of self expression and group responsibility leads to actors who are not only unique human beings, but are also flexible, adventurous, and gracious members of a team. This theatre training carries over into our staff, teachers, and board members. Our organization is built on the foundational values of empathy and open communication, which are both core aspects of our teaching methodology.

Our values and mission are reflected in our board members, who support us in our work to create a community gathering space for artists of all backgrounds. As a nonprofit organization, our board of directors is an essential part of our team. They are champions of the work we do and uplift the Workshop in so many ways. Their participation and belief in the Workshop is indispensable. Community is the core of our organization, with so many of our staff and teachers once students at the Workshop themselves and our board is no exception. We are so grateful to have this talented and energized group of individuals as a part of our community.
