History of Performance Project

Welcome to the Performance Project Production Archive!

For over 50 years, Piven Theatre Workshop has maintained both a professional theatre and a nationally acclaimed actor training center for children and adults. The mission of Piven Theatre Workshop is to encourage a process of creative exploration that celebrates each individual’s unique voice through an ensemble-based, community-oriented approach to theatre training and performance.

At Piven Theatre Workshop we are proud to produce the work of our two renowned youth companies, Performance Project and Young People’s Company. These ensembles are a key part of the work we do and highlight the skills that students gain through our acting classes. In these ensembles, our students devise and adapt stories with particular attention to the themes that they resonate with. Participation in these ensembles is a unique opportunity to explore topics that the actors feel passionate about.

Performance Project is an invitation only ensemble for middle school students. After training with us for multiple years, we invite our most advanced students to join this elite group of theatremakers. In this ensemble students continue to develop their acting skills through the Piven technique and collaborate to devise adaptations of fairy tales, folktales, myths and literary pieces. These actors have the chance to take on multiple roles in the production process as they improvise, devise and create their own unique adaptations. This process of storytelling is unlike any other and pushes students to develop professionalism, communication skills and a strong work ethic.

After Performance Project, many of our students continue their arts education in our high school performance ensemble, Young People’s Company. The journey from Performance Project to Young People’s Company offers students the opportunity to grow and learn within a tight knit and supportive environment. The skills that students learn in Performance Project are directly applicable to moving into our high school performance ensemble.

Below you will find details about our previous Performance Project festivals. We hope you enjoy learning more about the history of our performance ensembles.
